Gaze
This is a portrait of the most lessons that I have had without any conversation with my "Unforgettable Face" owner.
I saw this wonderful amazing woman from afar. She was eating an ice cream and thoroughly enjoying it. She was eating it as she was warming herself under the hot sun with the pleasure of a child. I think many people walk through life missing the most spectacular sites and missing the most amazing people. I have been very fortunate to look at as much as possible with artist's eyes. I look for art and precious moments everywhere in who people are, how they are living, and the life that is all around them. For me, this woman was very much living in the moment, and living life as artfully as possible.
When I got home, I did the lay out on Derwent water colour paper for water color pencils (A3). It was still fairly early in the day and then proceeded to start to draw. For this portrait, I started using my Faber Castell polychromos coloured pencils, using Paynes Grey. However, the night seemed to quickly come upon me but I could not stop my drawing. I used deepest purple and my deepest brown to add more depth. As the night progressed, the light got worse and worse and my ability to differentiate between the colours decreased. Finally when I felt done, I decided to wait until the next day to see the results.
The next day, when I got to look at it for the final assessment, I was delighted by the results. I love the depth of just drawing in tones not color. I think that was part of her lesson to me without saying a thing. Live in the now, experiment, what will be will be. Give new opportunities a chance. Sometimes, break down a moment into its basic ideas, allowing the moment to become the focus.
