So there I was again in the park, snapping photos. Then this marvellous man sat across from me looking over the railing and at the church goers. He was people watching and I was watching him.
When you go to the perch like spot, it is perfect for people watching and you can see humanity at its best: devotion of beliefs and compassion for others. I am sure you see other parts of humanity but most of the time it is the good stuff.
The church here in Baños de Agua Santa, Tungurahua, Ecuador is one that was made by the people and adorned by the people with devotion in mind. This is a simple church with a huge Ecuadorian personality. The devotion is very earthy and real. I think that is why I enjoy this church so much, its honesty.
After I had completed this coloured pencil painting, I was looking for this man who is the owner of this face. The problem was I would see him and not have my portfolio or I would have my portfolio and not see him.
Several months, later during the infamous crazy go cart race of Banos, there he was in the crowd right next to me. Believe me, I was pleased to have a chance to talk with him. We were joking and having fun and joking with everyone around including the policemen who were working traffic control. They all were really tolerant of my bad Spanish and accepted me regardless. We watched the go carts hurdling down the hill, yelling when it looked like they were going to crash into the crowds, or waiting impatiently for the next one to come down the hill. He was delightful intelligent, clever fun and insightful. I guess I wanted to check myself to see if what I quickly saw with my photo and my drawings were picking up the true heart and soul of this person. I am pleased to say that at least on this occasion, I was correct. This was one of the rare times I got to know my "Unforgettable Face", I just hope that his painting does him justice. When I look at this face, I remember not only the first time I took his picture but the day I got to know him.
Two years after this event, and lots of Facebook interaction with his family, I finally got to give him his picture. This project allows me to give back when it is perfect. I hope that this picture will give him as many good memories as it does me.
This paint was created using Derwent water colour paper for water colour pencils, A3, and Faber Castel polychromos coloured pencils.
