I took this photo in front of the Church in Baños de Agua Santa, Tungurahua, Ecuador.
He was thinking whatever he was thinking. I snapped the photo not realizing how important his picture would be. I think he knew something important was happening in this moment, as he looked up at me and smiled. But it was not a normal smile but a knowing smile.
Shortly after I did this layout, I got "the" phone call. My father was diagnosed with stomach cancer and was starting chemo and so on. It was the beginning of saying good bye. Within a short while, I went back to Canada for the first time in five years to be with him. My partner, kept reminding me, "Remember this is a moment between a father and his daughter". There were times when my dad was really ill and uncomfortable and other times when he was better. Whenever, I go to a hospital, I try to let amazing things happen and remember to try and keep a joyful heart. I try to allow hugs to flow and kindness to be a priority, especially in cancer wards. I was very lucky there were amazing hugs and sharing, I feel blessed.
Sometimes, my dad would sleep or be very quiet, so I would take out my pencils and work on this portrait. I remembered this "Unforgettable" look to me and tried to find my calm. It really helped me to stay grounded.
During this time also I had created a colouring book for my dad. That also reminded me the power of art. He would colour and so would I. We would sit together and do art. Doing art helped him with his pain management and also helped to calm him. Sometimes dad would not do art but watch me do art. Watching the creation of art is also very soothing.
The power of art is profound and full of energy. I have found that having art in my life so important in so many ways, this is why I wish to share it with others.
This painting was created using Derwent water colour paper for water colour pencils A3 and Faber Castell polychromos coloured pencils, and lots of tears.
