I love the fact that the local people here are stubborn to let go of their customs and clothing (their uniqueness) , that the world is trying to influence. I love that they are proud of who they are, where they come from, where they are going and being confident in all that. I love sharing my excitement of this project with all of you. I hope that it creates a bridge for compassion of other people on this planet, not just Ecuador but other places and cultures too.
I was asked about my "Unforgettable Faces" project by a "person", " if my project was actually me taking a jab or making fun at either "older people" or "local people" or "indigenous people". I have to say it took me back some steps. I was quiet for a long time, as I knew this was a statement I needed to make forever about this project. So here goes.
I really love people of all ages, and I have found living here in Ecuador has given me a closer contact and respect for people regardless of all else. You see, for me it is all about the people, the soul, the individual. It is about their story, it is about a face or voice not being lost. It is about honouring a memory: person, place and time. I find people, especially older people, wearing their life on their face. Your face, your eyes, your wonderful wrinkles share so much. What are you telling the world when you remove all of that? Especially here, in Ecuador the people wear their lives for the most part with integrity and a sense of reality. I love them, especially in this time where marks of life are told to you by propaganda to "best erase, to hide the character of you, you opinions, your you-ness".
I have to say that during this time, I have taken it to reflect and let go of the hurt, of those comments. It clearly shows a lack of understanding of what I am trying to do. I was very worried that since that comment was made, and made to my face not electronically, that others would feel the same. But I have let go of taking the responsibility of my message as being understood or not. Those who get that message will get it and enjoy it. Those who don't won't, they are a part of life also. I prefer to embrace life and all its little quirks and lumps and bumps, rather that erase everything so it becomes boring and all the same.
So if you have missed me that is what I have been doing.... just letting you know.
