Man at the Market
The investigations continue. Bright Sunday morning, I had one of those weird spidey sense feeling, premonition style, thinking I was going to find someone from my drawings. So I went to our regular farmers market here in Baños de Agua Santa, Tungurahua, Ecuador, looking for the owners of faces of my ¨amazing faces of Baños¨ project.
I didn´t find anyone from the "Unforgettable Faces" project but I ran into a friend who knows absolutely everyone in town. He took a look at my portfolio and he said that one is from a fellow but he is in a hospital in Ambato, the next city over. Milton offered to bring the picture to him for me, but I felt that I wanted to do the trip, not only to make sure it was the correct fellow but also to thank him for being him.
This morning I packed up and went on the bus to Ambato and to the regional hospital. It felt kind of weird, was I being a stalker trying to find someone I don´t know? What was I thinking travelling an hour away on a whim to find one of my favourite faces?
However, I got there just in time for visitors but the information desk was closed. That niggly spidey sense said to me to press on. So after explaining to the guards what I was trying to do, they let me in to try and find him.
Amazingly, in the first building the guard there said that he was there. I was very nervous, what do I say? What was I doing?
Sure enough it was him. I introduced myself to him and his daughter. Him has a name now....Sr. Segundo Turulde. They were very gracious and patient with me. I told him how honoured I was to be able to do his portrait and gave him the drawing. He graciously accepted and gave me a gentle kiss and hug. With tears in her eyes, his daughter also gave me a hug and kiss. I know how she was feeling as only 3 months later I visited my father in much the same situation, to say goodbye. It was a bit of a repeat of history but thanks to listening to my spidey senses, I made sure he got to see the painting and I got to say thank you. He said to me ¨agradecido¨ in a soft, fragile and sincere voice. I am grateful also and asked for just one more kiss.
This project of mine is both sweet and occasionally bitter, but for sure it is very tender and makes me glad to be doing it. This week sure has been tough though.....
