Old Man in Parade
This was one of the first coloured pencil portraits I had done since I was a child. I reintroduced myself to an old favourite medium, coloured pencils. Although this is not one of my best drawings, it is one of my favourites because I let myself re-experience an oldy but goody: coloured pencils. Now again I am addicted, as it brings out the kid in me. I feel now I have an adult outlook on coloured pencils, but coloured pencils keeps me in touch with my child artist side.
I didn't know at this time I would turn these portraits into a project, that was not my intention at the time. It did spur me on to realize how wonderful the Ecuador people are. When I do a portrait of people, I feel like I am getting in touch with the person. It is an intimate experience for me. For example, I am witnessing this powerful man about to go into a dance in a parade that is 2-3 km long and he will have to be strong, motivated and wanting to share his skills and beliefs with others. He is working himself up for the dance. He is also wearing a headdress that is about 4 ft high. I was not into the costume as I was into him and where he was in space and time.
I thank this man and his portrait for bring into my life the "Unforgettable Faces" project, it has made my life all the richer and made me grow as an artist.
Thank you sir.
This painting was created using Derwent water colour paper for water colour pencils, A3, and Faber Castel polychromos coloured pencils.
