Woman in Glasses
It is wet, cold and stormy today here in Baños, Tungurahua, Ecuador. It is a good day to hang out and create art. But this kind of day also inspires introspection and being philosophical.
I saw this woman in the park, and of course she caught my eye. Actually, it was the reflections in the glasses that caught my eye. I have never tried to recreate what happens in the lenses with light and reflection. It was a great lesson but it also asks the question what is she seeing and what is she thinking about.
Not long ago Banos was a village of farmers growing mandarins and avocados. Now it is a tourist town filled with restaurants and hotels. So much has changed in a very short time that I wonder how it effects the people of before. The tourist industry has greatly influenced the city's culture and openness. They are still wonderful people but I find myself wanting to know what was it like before.....especially when I look in her eyes.
This painting was a unique experience because it was created using windsor & newton watercolour markers and letraset aqua markers for the first time in portraiture. It really was a huge challenge. I had no idea how to properly use them... I used them both as a marker and a pallet paint using my water brush. If you are interested in trying a new mediums, I would HIGHLY recommend them. They are very expensive but oh so nice to use and beautifully pigmented. I think that they are challenging but a great learning experience.
The background was sprayed with dr. martin's hydrus water color paint using alcohol and water on Derwent water colour paper for water colour pencils (A3). Winsor and Newton water colour markers, Letraset Aqua markers.
